Meskel Happy Meskel (From Ethiopia)Meskel is one our favorite holidays at Sabahar. It marks the Finding of the True Cross (the cross where Jesus was crucified) and is celebrated by Ethiopian Orthodox Christians. It is one of, if not the most, revered holidays in Ethiopia. It is a time when people come together with family and friends to feast, dance, sing, and pray. The weavers start their holiday with three days of festivity followed by a day of rest to prepare the ‘Demera’. The Demera, a large bonfire made of dried sticks will be burned on Meskel Eve. Click on the photo above to watch Sabahar’s demera burning celebration. The holiday is most popular in the south among the people of Gamo-gofa, Wolayta, and Gurage, where the majority of our weavers are from. Many of our weavers travel to their birthplaces to celebrate with their extended families.
